In 2009, the Philadelphia Weekly posted an article about a young woman named Mimi. She was a victim of human trafficking who insisted on getting her life together. Mimi has spent much of her time very hopeful.
After being released from the world of human trafficking, Mimi hoped to be reintegrated by Dawn's Place in Philadelphia.
This place was thought to be a safe haven for her, but instead it was filled with empty promises. There was funding for Dawn's Place to help women and children victims, but only on the international level.
By the time it could help Mimi, she had committed suicide because of her emotional problems.
The root of these turn of events are very simple.
One of them happened to be spawned off of what a social worker said, which was: you must help the victims when they want help or you will lose them. Another root of these turn of events is: the belief that human trafficking does not exist America. Because of these two roots, Mimi was not able to get the help she needed and she suffered greatly for it. The sad reality is this is too common in America.
